A real shame that a young boy never got to experience a real upbringing in the land the that he’s from , a boy who missed out on the culture, friends and his family some of which had passed away. But it’s OK it will always have a place in this young boy’s heart.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>"I am an Irish Palestinian citizen, proud of my Palestinian heritage. Palestine boasts a rich history, with its people displaying true heroism. The struggle for freedom persists, and I am confident that we will overcome and attain the rightful freedom and rights we deserve. Above all, Palestine stands as a holy land, adorned with breathtaking landscapes and abundant crops. I yearn to witness the renowned olive tree groves I've heard so much about, and to behold the sacred mosques in Palestine. Long live Palestine."</image:caption>

<image:title>The meaning of Palestine معنى فلسطين</image:title>
<image:caption>"Palestine... Palestine is my country and homeland. It embodies all my hopes and aspirations; it is my mother and father. My heart is entwined with it, and my love for Palestine courses through my veins. It is the most cherished possession I have. Obviously, the ongoing events in Palestine do not bring happiness to anyone. However, the issue lies in the lack of action and concern. No one is moving, and no one is caring. Arab nations are divided and not supporting one another. The Arab leaders prioritize their own leadership and show little care for Palestine. Despite these challenges, I say to dear Palestine: Do not be disheartened and do not lose hope in achieving your dream of freedom. We stand firm on your land, resolute in our determination to attain freedom, despite all the difficulties. As for me, I am a root planted in your Palestinian land, and no one can ever uproot me. I love you, Palestine."</image:caption>

<image:title>The meaning of Palestine معنى فلسطين</image:title>
<image:caption>"Palestine is the land of my parents and grandparents, whose love courses deep within my veins—a symbol of a mother's kindness and a father's resistance. My love for Palestine will never wane, as my soul, blood, and breath are Palestinian. It stands as a doorway to history and glory, a place where spirits willingly give their lives. Palestine represents purity, a land we must one day return to and kiss its soil, if Allah wills. What lies between us is not confined to a year, ten, or a thousand years. Liberation battles endure as long as fasting, and we remain etched in your hearts like inscriptions on marble. Our rendezvous occurs with every sunset, and our imminent victory and conquest in Tel Aviv await the blessings of Allah. Smiles will grace the faces of Palestinian children once again, and the coming generation will experience joy, free from the tears in their mothers' eyes. The day will come when our aspirations and dreams of overcoming the enemy will become reality."</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Palestine is my dearest home and country; it's where I grew up and where the most cherished days of my life were spent. Like a treasured bride, she holds her trees, plains, and mountains. Although currently usurped, it's a temporary occupation, God willing. She's my mother whom I defend with all my might – my strength, resources, and family. Palestine will forever stand tall and defiant, rejecting humiliation and colonialism. My people and I will persistently fight until we liberate her. Palestine, the land of Israa and Meraaj, embodies our culture and civilization, a symbol we are proud of, and we will steadfastly cling to our traditions. I cherish this nation – its people, culture, and history. If I were ever to depart, I'm certain I'd yearn for it. Yet, an internal force constantly pulls me toward my homeland. While I haven't had the chance to visit Palestine, I share a connection ... There's a profound sentiment in my heart – intense love, immense passion, and unwavering loyalty to the land of my origin. I openly and privately declare my allegiance to you, Palestine, for you define my identity – the birthplace of heroes. Palestine is a land that inherently belongs to its people. On the other hand, my health has not fully recovered to this day. In the early days following my hunger strike, the movement of my body became very robotic and I weighed seven stone. However, this is no longer the case, my eyesight was permanently damaged which subsequently affected his balance resulting in him feeling nauseous. My sense of smell heightened that I could even smell the water I drank, which made it extremely difficult for me to drink it. I learnt to deal with it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 1987, I was on the camp staff, me and other political prisoners decided to up our protest. This brought along changes such as the right to an education and use of CD players. The atmosphere in prison from 1987 to 1992 had completely changed, at that point in my sentence, I was able to dialogue with prison governors and guards about issues such as food and education. We used the Irish language to communicate. We would shout through our doors to pass information and news to one another. It became a revolutionary act to learn the Irish language.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I was charged for criminal terrorism and had a 7 day detention in order to interrogate me. I went through refined form of torture. The RUC detectives were well trained in using techniques not to leave any marks on the victim. Torture was part physical and mental as well as humiliating the victim and mental abuse. There was a deblock court system also known as the inverted rules of evidence. I had no jury, just one judge. A statement would be made by a defendant or prisoner, the persecution had to prove that the statement was made under legal terms and voluntary. It was left to the defendant that he didn’t make any incriminating statement. He refused to make a statement.</image:caption>

To overcome sectarianism to adjust the needs for working people and various issues facing people such as homelessness and the health service. I believes that these are due to the type of societies that they have created for themselves both the republic of Ireland and northern Ireland. I also believes that they need to set up an all-Ireland republic. I doesn’t think I have changed. I am still working politically and my struggle has never ended for the last 40 years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Detainees of Guantanamo were stripped of all their rights, in fact an iguana had more rights than they did under the endangered species act. My stay in Guantanamo was more destructive as I spent all my time alone. My day was categorised into 5, dictated by my 5 daily prayers, however there is only so much one could pray, so I spent my time writing poetry and lists of things from books I wanted to read to words from every language I spoke. Even a pen was regarded as a security risk. I wrote letters to family even though I knew it would take from 6 months to a year for it to be received if it is delivered at all. I did not have any contact with family because all the letters I received would be heavily censored. I conversed with the guards who became lifelong friends, they brought me contraband like chocolate and fish.</image:caption>

While some might label me as being from the countryside, I know that people in Dublin often view it that way. It's not just the physical location, but it's also reflected in how I conduct myself, my way of speaking, and the company I keep. I've become deeply ingrained in the local culture here, which is distinctly different from my homeland's culture. I don't genuinely align myself with Pakistani culture, to be completely frank. Except for when I'm at home, my identification is more connected with my religion rather than Pakistani customs. I do acknowledge my uniqueness, and I consistently remind myself that I stand apart from the crowd, not adhering to the norms of the Irish people around me. This recognition empowers me to fully embrace my religion."</image:caption>

I'm not really from the countryside, like I know everyone in Dublin thinks I'm from the countryside. But it's the way I talk, the way I hang out with people. I've been so roped into the culture here. And it's so different from the culture at home. I don't consider or associate with the Pakistani culture to be really honest. Other than being at home, it is more religion for me than Pakistani culture. <image:caption>"I was born and raised here. My mother is Irish too, so a significant part of my identity is Irish. I've known no other way of life. Having a Caribbean father and an Irish mother, both of whom embraced Islam, is a true blessing. Their courage to let go of much of their original cultures, as they didn't align well with Islam, is something I admire. As I was growing up, my experiences were predominantly influenced by Islamic culture, though elements like food may have differed. I'm truly grateful that my upbringing was centered around Islamic values. While I used to visit my Irish relatives up North in Derry, there always seemed to be something missing. The connection there was more about blood than shared faith. Growing up within the Muslim community, attending a Muslim National School, I formed a strong bond with that aspect of my identity. My Muslim friends became more than just friends; they became a second family to me."</image:caption>

<image:caption>"I hail from North Dublin, with a heritage deeply rooted in Irish culture. Growing up, Christmas and Sunday dinners were fixtures in my life, as was attending church and participating in my communion and confirmation ceremonies. A pivotal moment occurred when I engaged in a conversation with a friend about the hijab, eventually leading me to embrace Islam and take my shahada on a Friday—a fresh start that empowered me. Since then, I proudly wear the hijab, using each act of kindness as a testament to my faith. However, my father expressed concerns about potential racial attacks after I began wearing the hijab. While my family embraced my faith, wearing the hijab remains a personal commitment to Allah and myself."</image:caption>

Because the Irish I hang out with are the very stereotypical type of Irish girls, I don't do all the things they may do or go to the places the might go to or hang around the same people they hang out with, and sometimes I feel that can make me separated from them. But it never made me feel not welcomed in Ireland. I don't fully fit into the Muslim community because I spend time with people who are not Muslim, the majority of my friends are not Muslim, and my school only has two other Muslims. So I don't fall into a Muslim circle I think I fit into a bit of both, which is part of my identity: that I'm equally in a Muslim society and an Irish ”</image:caption>

If I were in Algeria, I wouldn't have access to this type of support. They lack support for people with disabilities and have no schools that cater to those with disabilities. I had to stay in different hospitals for a while. All of the struggles and journeys that I've been through have made me a strong person. Alhamdulillah."</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I'm Sudanese, but my dad is Iraqi, and my mum is Irish. I was adopted as a baby by an Iraqi-Irish couple. Long story short, they found and adopted me from Sudan, becoming my parents. That's my background - an interracial couple. I visited Sudan in 2017 for the first time since being adopted. Attending a wedding was emotional. Despite speaking Arabic, I was still seen as an outsider because I was raised outside Sudan. They referred to me as "Khawaja" throughout the trip. It's like moving from a place in Ireland where I don't look Irish and people say I'm not Irish, to Sudan where I thought I'd fit in, but I'm seen as Irish. It's a strange connection. Back in Ireland, I'm told I'm not Irish enough and to go back to Sudan. I haven't been to Iraq, so I can't say about that.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I might not have been born in Ireland. It's a place I had never heard of before coming to live here. When the UN informed us about Ireland, my family and I had to search for it online. We had a choice between France and here. Our initial thought was that if we chose France, we might not be able to practice our faith freely due to the discrimination Muslims face there. Opting for Ireland was a leap into the unknown, especially since we weren't going to be residing in the capital. However, what we discovered were friendly people who enjoy smiling and laughing. (as they would say) That's what I've embraced from the Irish identity and integrated into my own.”</image:caption>

Truthfully, I avoid talking about it for that very reason. We're not allowed to voice our concerns. Our thoughts or experiences of that trauma, even though they're valid, real, and raw. They're the truth. We are heavily scrutinised and heavily penalised for it, despite it not being a crime, despite, you know, not saying anything wrong or illegal. And I can only say that when you’re Muslim, It's as if we can be on one side of the spectrum and be silent. Unfortunately, that's how I truthfully feel. The moment we are brave and courageous enough to speak up. It's at considerable risk.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“We'd never been a part of any court cases in our lives, yet little did we know from that moment, our life here would be all about legal battles, solicitors, and fees. When you hear about these stories, it's like a case, oh, in such a case, this happened for us on the receiving end. It's our life. It's our livelihood. It's our day and night. It's our breathing. We can't escape from it. You have to live with that. In our home, we had people from the press interviewing us in our living room. We had printers on the sofas because of the number of cases we had to battle. They were just there on the couch because you don't know which document to print out and serve or type up. We always had a file on the sofa. Once one case was closed, another would be served, and we had to start fighting another. For over a decade, it's been like that.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“When my father was arrested, it was like my life had come to a halt. To be honest with you, life has never been the same. It took a very unexpected turn. And I know that happens with many people for many reasons. I've carried on living my life, but my life stopped back then when my father was arrested, it was tough to explain. I guess it's very difficult to comprehend that unless you've lived through that experience yourself, he couldn't understand. You don't see it coming. And it's difficult because of the accusations used against a loved one who you never saw in that particular way. Who is a loving father, a companion, a friend, never as a violent extremist or a terrorist, and then you have to digest it. Not just the shock.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“When my father was arrested during the first week, he was at the police station. He called us, informing us that we weren't allowed back into our house yet. We lived in a hotel for an entire week. He conveyed to my mom that these people were suggesting, "Plead guilty, and we will release your son." The weight of that stress weighed heavily on my mother. She was already grappling with the trauma of her husband and son being arrested, and now she was displaced from her home. On top of all this, her husband was urging her to plead guilty to secure our son's release. In response, my mother adamantly told them that even if they were to cut off her head, she would not plead guilty.”</image:caption>
